This is recorded as an ordination group for Mrs Burke (seated in the fur coat?). Would imagine that the young priest seated in the one who’s just been ordained.

Family resemblances are strong here, and if they’re all from one family, then that means the Burkes produced two priests and one nun – a coup for any family at that time.

Sunday at St. Peter’s, Dec 2009 – 09

It was a crisp, sunny Sunday morning when I decided to join hundreds of tourists, visitors, pilgrims, and the religious faithful in the broad square outside the main entrance to St. Peter’s Basilica, in Rome. It was about 9:30, and lines began forming for those who wanted a tour, as well as those who wanted to attend a service later in the morning; according to this Wikipedia article, the Basilica can hold 60,000 people.

Meanwhile, others wandered about the open square, peering at the architecture and the statues and chatting with friends and family members. I wandered around the open square, too, but mostly to look for interesting people whom I could capture with my camera. There were priests and nuns, and several other people whose clothing signified some kind of religious affiliation, but whose specific role/title was unclear (bishops? acolytes? apprentices? religious students? who knows?).

As usual, I took several hundred photos during the course of the morning — but I’ve winnowed them down what I felt were the best 50…

These pretty flowers were at Leu Gardens and have been ideantified as Phaius tankervilleae

Akso called a Nun’s Orchid.

A terrestrial orchid with folded leaves, to 3 feet long, and ovoid pseudobulbs. The flowers have reddish-brown petals, purplish red lips. Throats are silver on the inside, yellow and reddish on the outside. Numerous blooms appear on upright racemes in summer. Use terrestrial orchid potting mix in deep containers. Requires filtered light and high humidity in summer, full light and less water in winter.
